Samurai Champs’ Summer of Showcases
“The future of Canada's Urban music scene might just lie in the wheat fields of Saskatchewan”
That’s how UK music website The Line of Best Fit described Samurai Champs.
It’s a reputation the band set out to build on this past summer by taking stages at three high profile showcase events in three countries, all with support from Creative Saskatchewan’s Market Travel Grant.
“NXNE in Toronto, Upstream Music Fest in Seattle, and New Skool Rules in The Netherlands were opportunities for Samurai Champs to build an network of international music industry professionals as we prepare to release our upcoming debut album,” said band co-founder Marvin Chan.
Connecting with industry decision-makers who hold international sway is essential to a musician’s pursuit of commercial success, particularly when you have your sights set in the opposite hemisphere.
“Penetrating the Southeast Asian Market is an immediate business goal for Samurai Champs,” said Chan.
“Showcasing gave us the chance to discuss booking opportunities with promoters in Malaysia and other markets in that part of the world.”
