Creating International Connections at Frankfurt Book Fair
Updated: May 8
Honouring the Buffalo returned to the Frankfurt Book Fair this year for its German translation launch. Co-authored by Judith Silverthorne and Ray Lavallee, Honouring the Buffalo explains the relationship of the Plains Cree people with the buffalo in both Cree and English. Originally published by Your Nickel’s Worth Publishing (YNWP) in 2014, it has since been published in French by Éditions de la nouvelle plume in 2016, and in German by MONS Verlag.
Earlier this year, YNWP, Éditions de la nouvelle plume, and Judith Silverthorne travelled to Frankfurt with the support of Creative Saskatchewan’s Market Travel Grant.
“With over 300,000 people in attendance over five days, the opportunity for exposure was magnified beyond anything imaginable.” -Judith Silverthorne, co-author of Honouring the Buffalo
Frankfurt Book Fair is the world’s largest print and digital content trade fair for international publishers, authors, and journalists. For YNWP publisher Heather Nickel, this networking opportunity was invaluable.
“There is interest from foreign publishers in the possibility of translating and publishing eleven of YNWP’s books as a result of YNWP’s attendance at Frankfurt Book Fair 2019. Without Creative Saskatchewan’s investment in market travel, YNWP would not have been able to attend Frankfurt Book Fair 2019 at all. Thank you so very much for the opportunity, and for your continued support of Saskatchewan’s creative industries and the value they have to the broader world.” -Heather Nickel, YNWP
The connections made by Saskatchewan publishers at this year’s fair are crucial for Frankfurt Book Fair 2020, where Canada will be the Guest of Honour.
