We caught up with Vivian of Woven by Vivian textiles to talk about her use of our Craft and Visual Arts Production grant at the ‘Craft Is…’ market earlier this year!
Here’s what she had to say:
“I am Vivian Wasiuta. I am here representing my company Woven by Vivian Textiles. I’m a hand Weaver. So hand weaving means that you don’t use any equipment, you use your body to weave things. I mean, I have a loom, but nothing is mechanized. It’s all by hand. So last summer I applied for a Craft and Visual Arts production grant, and I was awarded that. So for me, what it did was it gave me money that I could focus my time on just making work. So it paid for materials and it paid for my time and it enabled me to explore making some things that I had made before as well as just playing with ideas that I had worked with before and expanding on them in different colors, different materials, different variations. Making things by hand is really laborious and most of us can’t demand in our prices the cost of the materials and the time and the expertise that goes into it. So having a Creative Saskatchewan Craft and Visual Art production grant was a huge boost to my income for for that time.”
