Book Publishing Production Grant - Author-Funded Stream
The Author-Funded Book Production Grant supports self-publishers, or publishers working with Saskatchewan authors who have made a financial contribution to the cost of production, to produce and market a book.
Please note that this stream of funding is intended to support book production of Saskatchewan self-publishers or publishers working with Saskatchewan authors.
Saskatchewan Book publishers seeking funding to produce and market titles from out-of-province authors may be eligible for funding through the Book Publishers’ Stream.
- If you are a Saskatchewan author, or other individual contributing to the project creative, making a financial contribution to cover any portion of the cost of production, the publisher must apply to the Author-Funded Book Production Stream.
- Self-publishers or publishers can apply.
- A “self-publisher” is defined as an individual or a corporation whose primary goal is to publish books written by authors who are the individual or are shareholders or owners of the corporation, and who is distributing the book(s) through at least one bookselling channel.
Deadlines & Processing Time
- Opening date: May 14, 2024
- Deadline: July 17, 2024
All deadlines close at 4:00 PM Saskatchewan time. If a deadline falls on a statutory holiday or a weekend, applications will be accepted until 4:00 PM the following business day.
Application processing time: Applicants can expect to receive results within 10 weeks from the deadline date.
Results will be delivered via e-mail and will be available in GMS
Our Investment
- Projects will be funded up to a maximum of 50% of the approved project budget.
- No application may receive more than $10,000 per fiscal year (with the exception of projects involving significant illustration or photography, which may apply for a maximum of $15,000 per fiscal year).
- No applicant may receive more than $40,000 per fiscal between both streams of the Book Publishing Production Grant.
- Please note that in 2022-23, the Author-Funded stream of this program had an approval rate of 64% (nine out of 14 applications were approved).

Author Funded Stream Guidelines
- The official guidelines supersede all information contained elsewhere on this website, delivered to applicants by Program Advisors, or otherwise made publicly available.
Please note that if ineligible expenses (outlined in the Guidelines above) exceed 50% of the project budget, the application will be deemed ineligible.
Activities that receive funding from SK Arts or SaskCulture are not eligible for support through Creative Saskatchewan investment programs.

What’s new for 2024?
- It was clarified that authors, or other individuals contributing to the project creative, must be Saskatchewan residents.
- Titles for which the author, or other individual contributing to the project creative, does not receive financial compensation are an ineligible expense.
- Each title in the project no longer requires a separate budget.
- Titles where the publisher financially contributes to the project are an ineligible expense.
- It was clarified that core business operations or capital expenditures such as rent, purchase of real estate, office furniture, renovations, or maintenance costs are ineligible expenses.
- No application may receive more than $10,000 per fiscal year (with the exception of projects involving significant illustration or photography, which may apply for a maximum of $15,000 per fiscal year).
- No applicant may receive more than $40,000 per fiscal between both streams of the Book Publishing Production Grant.
- Applicants can now include both an administration fee and in-house expenses in their project budget.
- The following temporary change due to COVID-19 is now permanent and reflected in the guidelines:
- A restriction on the number of “reprint titles”.

What happens after I’m approved?
- 80% of your grant is paid when the application is approved. The remaining 20% of your grant is paid after the project is complete and your final report has been approved.
