SaskTel Max Equity Grant Helps Staying Wild Secure Interest From Broadcaster Major Distributor

March 13, 2024 by Megan Folden

Jackie Kripki is a successful grant recipient of our SaskTel Max Equity Grant for their TV show, Staying Wild.

Staying WildJackie Kripski’s six-episode series, Staying Wild, documents the ups and downs of the busiest wildlife rescue centre in Saskatchewan, the Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. When Kripski received the green light from CityTV that the show would go ahead, she was excited but quickly realized that filming was going to happen simultaneously with applying for a grant from Creative Saskatchewan.

Kripki was quick to point out how supportive the Creative Saskatchewan team was during the application process. “The team was very helpful in answering our questions, which only helped to strengthen our application,” she says.

Staying Wild directly employs approximately 20 Saskatchewan residents. This includes highly skilled people such as camera operators, location audio, camera assistant, director, audio post-production, assistant editor, editors, color and finishing, legal and accounting, story consultant, story editors, producers, and an executive producer. The show also promotes Saskatchewan to international markets where viewers learn about local wildlife and natural surroundings.

Staying Wild 2Receiving the SaskTel Max Equity Grant allowed Kripki to produce the show at a level that secured interest from a broadcaster and a major distributor. With a goal of getting Staying Wild seen in the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe, this interest provides the opportunity to sell it into those markets outside of Canada. “Without Creative Saskatchewan producing Staying Wild would not be possible,” Kripki notes.

When asked why she chooses to live and work here, Kripki states, “I love being here in Saskatchewan, the people are great and there are amazing stories still to be told. It’s an exciting time to be here because the real opportunity is taking a local story and turning it into something that people from other parts of the world will find interesting. And with the help of Creative Saskatchewan, I feel that goal is within reach.”

Live Performing Arts Production Grant Helps A Rez Christmas Carol Shine

March 13, 2024 by Megan Folden

Ed Mendez was successful in applying for a Live Performing Arts Production Grant for their live theatre production, A Rez Christmas Carol.

Ed Mendez, General Manager of Burnt Thicket Theatre, was successful in applying for a Live Performing Arts Production Grant for the theatre production of A Rez Christmas Carol. The production, which loosely adapts Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol with a local twist, played multiple shows in Saskatoon, North Battleford, and La Ronge. A comedic look at life on the Rez during the Christmas season, A Rez Christmas Carol brought Indigenous-based family entertainment to Indigenous families in those areas.

A Rez Christmas CarolAfter the passing of Jacob Mistahay, Purdy Parsimonias – a young Metis woman – takes over the position of Finance Manager for the Kiwetinohk Cree Nation. Parsimonias, a scrooge-like band manager, intends to eliminate financial bonuses for band members and cut major costs. This act catches the attention of the Spirits of the Four Directions. The Spirits take Purdy on a journey through the lives of the people she has affected. The consequences of Ms. Purdy’s choices and actions are revealed to her as the events of the story unfold creating a humorous and moving look at life on the Rez at Christmas time.

A Rez Christmas Carol’s writer, Curtis Peeteetuce, is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist from the Beardy’s & Okemasis Cree Nation. Since 2001, he has worked with many talented people in theatre, radio, drama, music, and film. He is a storyteller, actor, writer, director, dancer, musician, and playwright for the popular Rez Christmas Story series and his published plays include Nicimos, Kihew, and Popcorn Elder, which was nominated for two Saskatchewan Arts Awards.

Was the production a success? Markedly so. “The biggest win for this project was a 43% increase in attendance over last year’s Christmas production,” says Mendez. “Additionally, we were able to tour to the Dekker Centre for the first time in many, many years, which will be a huge boon to increasing our audience for future productions.”

Silverthorne Uses Feature Film and Television Production Grant to Share Perspective on Stuttering

March 13, 2024 by Megan Folden

Judith Silverthorne is a successful grant recipient of our Feature Film and Television Production Grant for her documentary, Echoed Words.

For Judith Silverthorne, receiving the Feature Film and Television Production Grant made all the difference while filming her documentary Echoed Words. “I was able to secure broadcasters and to film without being on a shoestring budget that limits potential fluidity, particularly in documentary production where sometimes opportunities to shoot additional material arise to give you those amazing results that garner award nominations and wins. I was able to expand my business capacity as well.”

    Echoed Words
Jayan Juneja visits Holly Lomheim at ISTAR Clinic

Silverthorne’s half-hour documentary, Echoed Words, aims to give a first-person perspective on the impact of being a person who stutters and how those who stutter find ways to manage and ease their lives. At the end of three days of treatment, audiences see improvements made and how it feels for someone with a stutter to be able to improve with everyday life and speech fluency.

“[Saskatchewan has] so much going for us, from the funding support of the provincial government through Creative Saskatchewan and also the support of SMPIA and their training programs, plus the already talented people living and working here, our varied landscapes, and opportunities yet to be tapped into with the soundstage and attracting more productions to be filmed here all the time.”

Not only was the Feature Film and Television Production Grant beneficial for Judith, but it also created a wonderful ripple effect for Saskatchewan’s economy. “I was able to hire primarily Saskatchewan people and work in Saskatchewan which provided economic spinoffs in the service industries and for organizations and businesses that supplied our materials and other needs such as accommodations, meals, and transportation. My projects also attracted other broadcasters to consider working with people from Saskatchewan.”

Silverthorne is grateful for Creative Saskatchewan for their support and encourages other entrepreneurs to take advantage of the programs available. “Consult with the Creative Sask program staff to see if your project is a good fit, learn all you can about the process, and ask questions when you are not clear about what is required. Being able to ask the advice of the Creative Sask staff in understanding the process, clarifying meanings and requirements, and appreciating the objectives of the film commission. The film commission is professional, efficient, and helpful, open to suggestions and improvements and great assistance is available.”

Judith stresses that grants from Creative Saskatchewan provide so many opportunities for growing your business. “Profit is what artists want. I consider myself an entrepreneur and am willing to try new and different things, try different perspectives, and although I often do things for sheer creative expression, I do want to make a profit so I can continue my artistic endeavours.”

Live Performing Arts Production Grant Helps Curtain Razors Bring ‘Untitled Peter Tripp Project’ to Vancouver

March 12, 2024 by Megan Folden

Curtain Razors was successful in applying for Live Performing Arts Production Grant for their production of Untitled Peter Tripp Project, presented by Pi Theatre, in Vancouver from April 30 – May 6, 2023.

Untitled Peter Tripp ProjectUntitled Peter Tripp Project is the collective work of contemporary dancer Johanna Bundon, performance creator Jayden Pfeifer, and contemporary artist Lee Henderson. After performing to ten sold-out crowds in Regina in 2021, Curtain Razors was invited to take their project to Vancouver’s Pi Theatre.

Peter Tripp, a once-celebrated radio DJ, performed a publicity stunt in 1959 wherein he broadcast continuously, for 201 hours, from a glass booth in Times Square. This act was his undoing — he suffered psychological complications from prolonged sleep deprivation, and his increased fame made him a target for investigators who would accuse him of commercial bribery in the “payola” scandal of 1960.

Untitled Peter Tripp Project is an immersive theatre experience created by Bundon, Pfeifer, and Henderson, and performed by this trio and artist Tess Degenstein. The work highlights the natural interdisciplinarity of performance, engaging space, breath, gesture, voice, light, and sound with equal importance. The performers enter the arena of Tripp’s myth to research their personal relationships to themes of exhaustion, public failure, and loneliness.

Untitled Peter Tripp Project 2Here in Saskatchewan, Curtain Razors boasts a healthy and engaged audience. While they’re trusted and well-established locally, their focus now is moving to grow that influence and marketability in a larger centre. The Live Performing Arts Production Grant allowed them to do just that. “Our Vancouver tour was an incredible opportunity to connect with peers and makers from this region, and to share our current work and the larger narrative of Curtain Razors as a company,” says Pfeifer.

Curtain Razors was able to introduce themselves and their creation processes to several key individuals in Vancouver, including several Artistic Directors and western Canadian performing agents, who all had very positive feedback. The group also met with Managing Producers from PuSh Festival and the Anvil Centre; venues which would be great partners for Untitled Peter Tripp Project in the future. Pfeifer points out that “These encounters are foundational towards future touring of our work.”

Pfeifer suggests that funding touring opportunities outside of Saskatchewan is so valuable, “because it allows artists to have their work seen, and responded to by peers in other centres. And, to bring that knowledge home to help seed and germinate creation here.”
