Your Nickel’s Worth Publishing: Sharing Indigenous Narratives

January 30, 2025 by Carrie Sweeney

Your Nickel’s Worth Publishing successfully applied for the Book Publishing Production Grant (Author-Funded Stream) for the publication and reprint of several titles.

Your Nickel’s Worth Publishing (YNWP) prioritizes books written by prairie people, or that deal with prairie subject matter. They are deeply committed to providing a publishing resource for those niche writers and illustrators whose stories might not otherwise be publicly told.

The funds from Creative Saskatchewan supported YNWP in the publication of Tanning Moose Hides the Northern Saskatchewan Trapline Way: An Easy Step-by Step Guide by Denesųłiné Elders Lawrence and Lena Adam, Woodland Cree knowledge carrier Tommy Bird and author Miriam Körner.

Tanning Moose Hides Book CoverWith over four decades of experience, the Elders and Bird share their lifetime of experience to guide a new generation of hide tanners. Combining traditional knowledge with easy-to-follow instructions and detailed colour photos, this practical guide was made to keep the tradition alive.

The publication of Tanning Moosehides the Northern Saskatchewan Trapline Way was a huge hit from the start. Your Nickel’s Worth Publishing sold 65 copies within the first two weeks of publication, while the authors sold more than 200 copies themselves. Over 1,300 copies have been sold to date. YNWP has submitted this title for consideration for inclusion in Indigenous Books for Schools.

Additionally, YNWP made successful reprints of two of their past publications.

When the Trees Crackle with Cold: A Cree Calendar/pīsimwasinahikan by Bernice Johnson-Laxdal and Miriam Körner

When the Trees Crackle with Cold book coverThis timeless picture book about the moon calendar of the northern Cree shares our connection to the seasons and cycle of nature, and its warmly rendered watercolour illustrations bring Saskatchewan’s north to life. Written in English and the northern Plains Cree y-dialect, inviting Cree and non-Cree speakers alike to explore the traditional moon calendar.

Since the arrival of the reprint in January 2024, Your Nickel’s Worth Publishing has sold over 10,000 copies of this award-winning, in-demand title. Based on its great appeal and bestselling status, YNWP is currently in negotiations to sell the foreign publishing rights to this book to a US publisher.

When We Had Sled Dogs: A Story from the Trapline/ācimowin ohci wanihikīskanāhk by Ida Tremblay and Miriam Körner

When We Had Sled Dogs book coverA Story from the Trapline, ācimowin ohci wanihikīskanāhk takes readers young and old on a journey into the past when dog teams were part of the traditional way of life in Northern Saskatchewan. Inspired by Elder Ida Tremblay’s childhood memories, and told in English with Woodland Cree words and phrases, the story follows the seasonal cycle of trapline life.

The reprint of When We Had Sled Dogs was out of stock nearly the moment it arrived in March, 2024. Just under 1,300 copies were purchased for Literacy Week by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education, sending this title immediately back to press, with a total of 4,500 copies sold to date.

The success of these titles has been undeniable. Heather Nickel, founder of Your Nickel’s Worth Publishing, shared her appreciation, “YNWP is very grateful to Creative Saskatchewan for their support with projects like these, particularly since the purpose of the books in this project is to share and retain traditional Indigenous knowledge. Thank you.”

The above books and more can be purchased on YNWP’s website: https://www.ynwp.ca/

January 23, 2025 by Carrie Sweeney

Creative Saskatchewan funds seven industry associations, helping them achieve their mandates to support Saskatchewan’s creative small businesses and creative producers, and helping build extraordinary businesses. As their primary funding agency, we proudly provide operational and program funding for SaskBooks.

SaskBooks has championed Saskatchewan publishers since 1989, becoming the vibrant heart of the province’s book publishing scene.

Highlighting the economic impact of Creative Saskatchewan’s support, Jillian Bell, Executive Director of SaskBooks, commented, “We are extremely fortunate to have an agency like Creative Saskatchewan supporting creative industry, creative producers, creative small businesses, and of course, creative industry associations. Their support has helped SaskBooks market and promote Saskatchewan books for more than a decade, has helped publishers’ business development, and has opened doors for publishers to engage in international rights sales, and export marketing. They also make it possible for SaskBooks to undertake much-valued industry research and sector development. Without Creative Saskatchewan and its ongoing operational and project support for SaskBooks and its investment in the publishing sector, the province would lose out on more than $2 Million in economic activity.”

Printmaking Excellence Celebrated at Remai Modern

January 21, 2025 by Carrie Sweeney

Sponsorship from Creative Saskatchewan was used to support a memorable printmaking program at Remai Modern in September. This event brought together artists, writers, printmakers, and art historians from across Canada to explore the innovative and collaborative aspects of printmaking.

Remai Modern has a decades-long print collecting history dating back 60 years, beginning with its predecessor the Mendel Art Gallery, over which they have collected over 1,400 works.

The two-day event featured a variety of programs, including exhibition tours, panel discussions, artist talks, and printmaking studio tours. Highlights included a tour of the exhibition “Life in Print: William Kentridge & Pablo Picasso,” a panel discussion with master printers and Creative Saskatchewan grant recipient Jillian Ross and Steven Dixon, and an artist talk by Wally Dion.

They were visited by Dr. Frederick Mulder, a Picasso print specialist and international print dealer from London. Mulder, born in Ontario, lived in Saskatchewan from the age of 9 and earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Saskatchewan. He delivered the annual Mendel International Lecture, sharing the fascinating story of how Remai Modern acquired the world’s greatest collection of Picasso linocuts. His lecture was a sold-out event, deeply engaging the audience with his personal connection to Saskatchewan and his expertise in the printmaking industry.

Creative Saskatchewan’s support enabled Remai Modern to provide valuable learning opportunities—specifically, how to be successful in the business of printmaking. The funding allowed audiences to gain insights from industry experts like Dr. Mulder and highlighted the international success of local entrepreneurs such as Jillian Ross and Brendan Copestake.

Bevin Bradley, the Remai’s Assistant Curator raved, “We are so thankful for your contribution, and all the ways in which Creative Saskatchewan enriches the arts landscape of our province and communities,”

La Nouvelle Plume Brings Francophone Voices To The Forefront

January 14, 2025 by Carrie Sweeney

Francophone publisher La Nouvelle Plume has been awarded the Book Publishing Grant (Publisher’s Stream) for their 2023-24 Publication Program.

This grant supported the publication of four books by seven different authors, under the guidance of Managing Editor Jean-Pierre Picard. La Nouvelle Plume is dedicated to stimulating the interest of Francophones and Francophiles of all ages and backgrounds in writing and reading by publishing quality books in French in Saskatchewan. The 2023-2024 program includes the following notable works:

Les quatre saisons de Rousse-Bedaine / The Four Seasons of Rusty-Belly

Author: Danielle S. Marcotte

Illustrator: Francesca Da Sacco

This book offers a poetic journey through the heart of the seasons and introduces readers to the migratory world of birds in the beautiful Boundary Bay Regional Park in British Columbia. Visual Material for this bilingual children’s book was provided by Ducks Unlimited.

La Nation provisoire / The Provisional Nation

Author: Laurier Gareau

This work features key figures of the resistance that shook the Métis world in the Northwest and the relations between Francophones and Anglophones.

Du rêve parisien au froid des Prairies / From Parisian Dreams to the Cold of the Prairies

Author: Pierre Minkala-Ntadi

A man with dreams of Paris ends up on the Canadian Prairies. This novel provides a unique perspective on the adaptation of newcomers to Canadian reality.

À cœur ouvert / With Open Hearts

Authors: Frédérique Roussel, Sharon Pulvermacher, Mychèle Fortin, and Marie Carrière

This collection unites poems, tales, stories, and reveries in a unique universe punctuated by tenderness, heartbreak, allegories, and adventures.

Two of these recently published authors celebrated their book launch last year. Notably, Pierre Minkala-Ntadi became the first author of African origin published by La Nouvelle Plume. The grant facilitated the publication of his book and the hiring of an editor to help improve his manuscript.

Additionally, the grant enabled the publication of Laurier Gareau’s most recent play, La Nation provisoire / The Provisional Nation, and the recruitment of French Métis language specialist Robert A. Papen to review the language used in the book. The book includes a short text by Papen explaining the nature of the French Métis language.

Breaking Boundaries: respectful child Creates Impactful Album Trailer

January 13, 2025 by Carrie Sweeney

Musician respectfulchild received Creative Saskatchewan’s Marketing Grant (Micro Stream) to promote their album 更新 re:new.

Starting music lessons at just four years old, respectfulchild has been playing violin for most of their life. After hundreds of hours of required practice and exams, they managed to maintain a loving relationship with music. The multidisciplinary artist has been making ambient, experimental music with their violin and exploring their creativity since 2015. Creating under the name respectfulchild (a literal translation of the mandarin name given to them by their grandmother)their unconventional use of a classical instrument creates exquisitely unique sounds that captivate and inspire listeners.

With the support of the Marketing grant, they promoted their most recent album 更新 re:new which came out in November of 2023. The grant allowed respectfulchild to hire a digital promoter, work with a film crew to create a trailer, and create some fun special effects such as a prosthetic belly, CD ultrasound, and a violin puppet named ‘Pluck’. With the album’s theme being connected to gender, the artist designed the video concept as a play on pregnancy announcements and gender reveals. “The trailer has given me and the album lots of visible recognition when I go to play festivals and shows.”

This concept album draws a parallel between their classical music training and the gender binary. “I was thinking of how the violin is a body and how we’re taught to use that body in a specific way, in the same way we’re taught very specific things about ourselves based on the body we’re born into,” they explained, “I wanted a space to question all these rules we are told, whether it’s about music or about our place in society.” The album travels through a farewell to classical music and their gender, moments of pause, uncertainty, despair, and renewal. “By the end of it, I realize that I don’t have to throw everything away, but that it’s empowering to be able to choose what I want to keep rather than doing things a certain way because we’re told to.”

The album launch was a success, selling round the world, with airplay as far as Stuttgart, Germany. The artist has plans to make more videos with Pluck, the violin puppet, and will be making an appearance at Winterruption in Saskatoon later this month. Through accessing the marketing grant Zochi was able to work with a publicist for the first time in her career. This connection expanded her reach to radio stations and DJ pools across Canada and internationally. Whole Again received significant airplay, including features on Marvin’s Room CBC Nationwide and iHeart Radio—an American radio streaming platform. The song became a regular part of Orbit Radio’s programming in Toronto, Canada. Additionally, interviews across both national and international platforms have been instrumental in enhancing her brand, amplifying her artistic exposure, and boosting her commercial presence.

The use of the grant facilitated the production of her first official music video, featuring a song that means a lot to Zochi, “Alone (Whole Again) is my first Afrobeats composition and is a song I used to truly bring to light my identity with Same Sex Love, and Religion.” She was moved to see how her story resonated with people worldwide. She adds, “I am truly thankful to Creative Saskatchewan for their support, this opportunity was a dream come true that helped inspire more dreams and overcome many fears I had. It feels like laying the foundation and now I am building on it. Thank you guys!”

With her followers steadily climbing, Zochi is amping up to create a short film to continue promoting her new EP. The artist continues to captivate audiences with each new release, showing no signs of slowing down. Follow her journey and stay updated through her website or the social media links below.
